David is a Chartered Accountant, having worked in Leeds with one of the Big 4 firms, before joining Garbutt and Elliott, a regional firm of Chartered Accountants with a HO in York, where he became managing partner and chair. David also served on the Board of Praxity, a worldwide association of accountants that employs 35,000 people with a turnover of over $5bn.
David moved into the third sector in 2015, advising family companies on succession strategies and good governance. He took up a number of non-executive roles in family companies and devoted more time to regional matters. He was the chair of the Shepherd Group shareholder committee for 6 years, and is an advisor to the Institute of Family Business, sitting on its Taxation Group .
David chaired the Audit Committee of the University of York and in 2007 became the university’s treasurer. He held this post until 2019, while simultaneously being a member of the University Council, Court, a member of the Remuneration Committee, and chair of the university Finance and Policy Committee.
In 2016, David joined the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) board becoming its deputy chair a year later. As part of the LEP, David also chairs the Regional Infrastructure and Joint Asset Board and the LEP’s Performance Board. He is also a member of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund Advisory Board and advises regional and national bodies on funding, particularly for SMEs.
David’s voluntary work includes acting as a trustee for a number of local and regional charities. In particular, he chairs St Leonard’s Hospice in York, the Yorkshire and Humber Hospice Chairs Group and he sits on the Hospice UK Chairs Forum.
